Sub-Strand 1.1: Compilation and Standardisation of the Qur’an
1. Compilation Under Caliph Abu Bakr (R.A.)
a) Circumstances Leading to Compilation
Many Huffaz were martyred in the Battle of Yamama.
Fear arose that parts of the Qur’an would be lost.
Umar ibn al-Khattab (R.A.) persuaded Abu Bakr (R.A.) to compile the Qur’an.
Although initially hesitant, Abu Bakr (R.A.) accepted due to the necessity.
b) The Compilation Process
Zayd ibn Thabit (R.A.), the Prophet’s scribe, was appointed to lead the task.
All written fragments were collected (bones, leaves, stones, and leather).
Material was cross-checked with the companions’ memorisation.
Two witnesses were required for each verse.
The compiled manuscript was kept with Hafsa bint Umar (R.A.).
